My favorite example of irony was how the grandmother dressed. She said that if she was caught dead on the highway everyone would know that she was a lady. She was caught on the side of the road dead, but not because of an accident. This can be verbal irony and situational irony. Verbal irony is when something different happens from what is said. Situational irony is when what is expected to happens does not happen. Both of these ironies play a role because the grandmother did not really expect to die. She was saying that as a way to dress nice. Even though the grandmother said that about dressing we did not think that she would die. Flannery O’Connor did a nice job with the irony.
